Nightbirde, and what are we doing here?

It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Nightbirde recently. I did not know her but her song “It’s Ok” really touched me when I heard it for the first time as I had a friend battling cancer too at the time.

Although it’s always difficult to judge from social media I do feel her authenticity always shone through. She was real about how she felt and yet despite her illness, her light always shone through.

It seems it touched a few million other people too because it was viewed 41 million times since the video was released on YouTube in June last year.

It’s whenever someone passes, near or far in all respects that we reflect on the ever-essential question “Why am I here?”

I think however that’s the wrong question. And it’s only after some months of the passing of my beloved friend Farai and the recent news of the passing of Nightbirde, that I realise this is the wrong question.

What we’re doing here is living. Well, so we should be. Some of us are living in a mess. Some of us are living unintentionally. Some of us are living our best lives. But whatever the state of affairs, if you’re reading this, well then you’re alive.
